Styles of Yoga

Kundalini Yoga Class

The fundamental essence of Yoga is for self-realization and connection with the higher consciousness. How we practice and which style we practice is all up to us. There now exists a variety of Yogas that an aspirant can choose to practice. With Raja Yoga being the most commonly practiced and known, we will describe some of these below.

Styles of Yoga

Hatha Yoga

The most commonly found style of Yoga that you can find in your local Yoga studio. Hatha Yoga is generally a slower-paced Yoga, with emphasis on specific Asanas and holding them for a length of time. Static poses are more found here.

Kundalini Yoga

This style of Yoga, as the name suggests, is aimed at developing the practitioner's mind and body so that it is ready for the activation of Kundalini. This Yoga has predominantly more seated postures, as well as an emphasis on meditation and pranayama. Rather than using Asanas, Kundalini Yoga emphasizes more on 'Kriya', which is a sequence of actions performed for an intended result.

Yin Yoga

The Yin in Yin Yoga comes from the Chinese principle 'Ying-Yang'. Yang is the masculine, active aspect, and Yin the feminine, nurturing aspect.

Yin Yoga usually has only a few postures in a class and is much slower and softer than other Yogas. Postures are held for longer periods, with a focus on deep tissues and our fascia muscles.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga consists of set sequences of varying difficulties. It is generally more physical and strenuous than other Yogas. It helps promote physical well-being, mental clarity, and resilience.
