Get To Know Meditation

Meditation begins as a practice just as any other regular practice. It starts off a little challenging. Before it becomes a part of our life, an ingrained feature of our personality, meditation starts exactly like your first swimming class or tennis class. Dedication, patience and perseverance!

Feel encouraged to meet meditation gently at first. Just like dipping your toes to feel the water before walking steadily into the river, try treating your beginning meditation practices like a slow dance. Get to know all that is involved.

  • Physical environment. Where are we practicing?

  • Posture. How are we sitting? Is it comfortable? Forced?

  • What clothes are we wearing. Are they comfortable? Do they restrict any postures?

  • How did we begin the practice? What was our headspace before?

  • How long ago was food and caffeine consumed?

These are some great questions we can check off before every sitting. Think of it as stretching before going for a run.

Once these preliminary aspects are clear, we can move onto some simple practices to start.

Breathing is essential

Start to get to know your breath. The vital air which keeps our bodies alive, our minds sharp and our organs healthy. The pattern of our breath is linked to our state of being.

If we learn to become aware of and control our breathing then we find the remote control for our wellbeing.
